Cricket at LA 2028 Olympics May Be Shifted to New York to Attract Indian Viewers
Cricket at 2028 Olympics moved out of Los Angeles: To capture the attention of Indian audiences, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics might relocate the cricket event to New York, which is nearly a six-hour flight from LA.
India's time zone is 9.5 hours ahead of New York, making it more convenient for Indian viewers compared to the 12.5-hour gap with Los Angeles. According to The Times, Casey Wasserman, chairman of the LA 2028 Organizing Committee, mentioned in Texas that plans for cricket will prioritize India's viewership. Including cricket in the LA 2028 Games is largely aimed at appealing to South Asian audiences and securing larger broadcast deals, particularly from the subcontinent. The shift to New York could strengthen this strategy by ensuring better broadcast timings.

New York recently hosted matches during the 2024 T20 World Cup at Nassau County in a makeshift stadium with drop-in pitches. However, weather disruptions affected some games. Reports suggest the Olympic cricket matches might take place at Marine Park in Brooklyn, home of MI New York from Major League Cricket. There are also discussions about building a 10,000-seat stadium, though it’s unclear if it will be completed in time for the Olympics.
A key advantage of moving cricket to New York is easing logistical pressure on the LA organizers. Recent Olympics have aimed to cap the number of athletes at around 10,000. Shifting cricket to a different location could help manage athlete numbers, as the eight men’s and women’s teams will each consist of 15 players and five support staff, totaling about 320 people across both events.
