IPL Auction 2025: James Anderson's Registration Cancelled Out By IPL Team CEO

It came as a surprise when James Anderson applied to be a part of the IPL 2025 Auction. The 42-year-old has already retired from international cricket and played his last Test against West Indies to bring a stellar career to an end.

Now that he has completely retired from international cricket, he has the option to play franchise cricket. As a result, he put his name up for the IPL 2025 auction for a base price of INR 1.25 crore.

Anderson is listed as Player No. 479 in the auction register. He played 19 T20Is in his career, with his last appearance way back in 2009. He has been preferred as a potential red-ball option for the last few years of his career.

James Anderson's White-ball Numbers

Due to his limited T20 experience, it remains interesting to see whether he gets picked by any franchise. James Anderson has played 44 T20s and picked up 41 wickets at an average of 32.14 and an economy rate of 8.47. His last T20 match was way back in 2014 and hence, it has been a decade since he has played a T20 match.

Anderson's last List A match was in May 2019 for Lancashire. While he hasn't played many T20Is, he has played 194 ODIs for England and picked up 269 wickets at an average of 29.22.

IPL Franchises Have Their Say on James Anderson

The CEOs of some IPL franchises claimed that it's not a good decision by James Anderson to put his name at the auction. The CEO mentioned that Anderson is not suited for IPL at this age and no franchise will go for him as it will deduct a big amount from their auction purse.

"It doesn't make sense at all. He's not a T20 player, and at this stage in his career, he's not suited for the IPL. If someone wants him as a coach, why would they use Rs 1.25 crore from their player purse?" a senior CEO of a franchise was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

There was a similar view from another team official who claimed that Anderson might not get picked since the team budgets are low at the final stages of the auction. The high base price won't allow any franchise to sign him.

"Someone could very well pick him. But when certain teams' budgets are so low and they are looking for Rs 50 lakh or Rs 75 lakh players at the backend of the auction to fill up their roster, it's unlikely they will have that much to spend. He should apply for that post if he wants to be a mentor. But you never know," the official said.

Most Successful Fast Bowler in Tests

There is hardly any doubt on James Anderson's quality as a fast bowler. The legendary quick is the most successful fast bowler in the history of Test cricket and the third-highest wicket-taker having picked up 704 wickets in 188 Tests at an average of 26.45.

However, his T20 credentials do not inspire confidence, making it difficult for him to be picked at the auction. Modern T20 cricket is fast-paced, making it challenging for the former England seamer to make it into the IPL 2025.
